Restore freshwater and wetland biodiversity in the Middle Danube DEMO by operating a Green Hatchery for native fish species, supporting waterfowl populations in the Topoljski Dunavac and Šarkanj canal system.
METHODOLOGY
Nature-based Green Hatchery using local capacities; native fish cultivation and adult release with local fisheries NGOs; combined with hydrological reconnection, biodiversity monitoring, and water/soil quality assessment.
OUTCOME
Green Hatchery operational in DEMO-MD; increased fish population supporting vulnerable waterfowl (Ardeidae, Ciconiidae, Threskiornithidae); monitoring data generated; business model developed for SME replication.

Sediment transport and budget modelling; historical pollution analysis; UAV, bathymetry and water-quality monitoring; hydrotechnical connectivity interventions; transnational sediment task force for stakeholder co-management.

Demonstrated solutions across Upper, Middle and Lower Danube; reduced chemicals, plastics and microplastics; strengthened transnational cooperation; replication pathways for other European river basins.
